A gunman killed a faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill in a laboratory building on campus, leading to a lockdown at the university and nearby K-12 schools.

Campus officials and police confirmed that a person was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. However, they did not disclose the identities of the person in custody or the deceased faculty member.

All UNC classes and activities were canceled for Monday night and all day Tuesday following the incident.

The shooting took place at Caudill Labs on the first day of the university's second week of classes and coincided with the start of Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

The initial 911 call reporting shots fired was received at 1:02pm. Subsequently, lockdowns were initiated across the campus and community, which remained in effect until nearly 4:15pm.

Throughout the lockdown, students shared videos and pictures on social media, a person was detained and later released after being cleared of suspicion, and concerned parents and community members sought updates.

UNC issued an alert about an "armed and dangerous person" on or near campus at 1:03pm, immediately following the 911 call. Shelter-in-place orders and window avoidance instructions were sent to students at 1:21pm.

The suspected shooter was detained by the police at 2:31pm, around 90 minutes after the initial 911 call. A photo of a person of interest was posted on social media four minutes later.

The shelter-in-place orders continued to be in effect, with UNC alerts indicating the suspect was at large, until after 4pm. The delay in lifting the lockdown was attributed to the time required by the police to identify the shooter. Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public Schools received the "all clear" to dismiss at 3:40pm.
